THE ELECTRIC PRUNES
Mass in F
minor
(Reprise,
1968)
What can one
say about such a masterpiece? The band was coming apart, there are studio
musicians on half the tracks, and this was (of all things) a last ditch effort
by the producer to get a hit record for a band called The Electric Prunes.
I can say, and will, that I wished the owners of this work didn't feel compelled
to add on two "bonus" tracks after the six original pieces on the CD
issue. They have nothing at all in common with the soaring, searing, meditative
music that happens before them and somewhat shatter the moment. I burned a copy
sans these and am a happy boy once more!
Why anyone in their right minds would think a Catholic mass sung in Latin chant
over six long meandering pieces of psychedelic ecstasy would be a hit... well,
maybe I just answered the question. Anyway, I'm glad he/they did; it is an
absolute masterpiece, an essential must-have, and the album I play my guitar
students when they say "What is psychedelic music?"
The music is urgent, flowing, driving and ever-changing with some GREAT
feedback-laced guitar playing over the top...
(more to come!)
